Indian Cobra aka Black, Spectacled, Pakistani Cobra

cobra close up

A native of India, and most of Asia, the Indian cobra (also known as the spectacled, black and Pakastani cobra) is considered to be one of the worlds deadliest creatures. With a length of 6 to 7.25 feet (1.8 - 2.2 meters), and its characteristic hood (made up of flexible neck ribs and loose skin), it wouldn't need much help frightening anyone you know, but it gets it anyway, in the form of a highly venomous bite, and its ability to spit venom over 6 feet (2 meters) away (it can force venom through its fangs by exerting muscular pressure on its venom glands). The Indian cobra resorts to these attacks after taking its well known threat posture; in which it flares its hood (which also has markings that resemble “sinister” eyes) and raises the front third of its body length.

The Indian cobra preys mostly on rodents, lizards, and frogs, but that doesn't stop it from biting the unfortunate humans who happen to cross paths with it. It is considered one of the “big four” in regards to being one of the top four species in the number of humans bitten per year. Its venom contains a very powerful post-synaptic neurotoxin that temporarily paralyzes the muscles of the bitten, with more severe bites leading to respiratory failure or cardiac arrest in human victims.

Indian cobras are very protective of their eggs, with females guarding the clutch of 8 to 45 eggs all day and night except for her own feeding time.

The handsome hooded reptiles have become common in popular culture because of the age-old practice of “snake charming”; in which a performer with a flute coaxes the snake from a basket using his music. In actuality, the Indian cobra is deaf to the sound of the flute and is instead following the visual motion of the flute itself and feeling vibrations in the ground from the charmer's foot tapping.

Indian cobras were once killed for their venom and during staged fights with mongooses (their natural predator). However, they are now protected by Indian Wildlife Protection Act of 1972, and are safe from such practices. Due to this protection, and their own self-defense mechanisms and habits, their population has stabilized. These guys will be around to bite us for years to come.

Cape Cobra - Yellow and Deadly from Southern Africa

cape cobra standing open hood

The cape cobra is found in the dry, semi-desert regions of southern Africa, particularlyin the Northern Cape in South Africa and in parts of Botswana. In the Kalahari region, it is a yellowish color, with uniform brown speckles. It is a medium-sized snake, with adults measuring between 120cm (46.8 in) and 180cm (70.2 in).

Climbs Trees

The cape cobra is diurnal and its diet consists of reptiles (including other snakes), rodents and birds. It is very good at climbing trees with low overhanging branches, and it is known to raid the nests of weaver birds. The snake makes use of a neurotoxin that targets the respiratory system. If the cape cobra bites an adult human, there is a 60 percent chance of death if no antivenom is available. Bite victims die from respiratory failure, due to the onset of paralysis from the venom. Large amounts of antivenom is needed to treat a bite. Because this cobra has the most powerful venom out of all African cobras, it has the highest rate of fatalities.

The cape cobra is not normally an aggressive, confrontational snake, but will fight if it is threatened and has no clear escape route. The snakes are also quite nervous, so the best thing to do, is to remain calm and make no sudden moves if you encounter one.

Beware the Hood

The cape cobra is not a spitting snake, and when it feels threatened, it will hold its front section erect and spread its hood, making its head and neck appear bigger. Their main predators are raptors and the mongoose, or regional variant, the meerkat. These two animals are sworn enemies and have spectacularly fast, fatal battles. Typically, a group of around three meerkats will take on a cape cobra if the snake ventures into their burrows or territory. The honey badger, or ratel is another predator that the snake has to deal with.

Black Mamba - Deadly, Large, Fastest Snake

black mamba mouth

Also known as the common black mamba or black-mouthed mamba, the black mamba is the longest venomous snake in all of Africa. The average length is around 8.2 feet (2.5 meters), but there have been specimens found that have grown up to 14 feet (4.3 meters). It's named not for any sort of dark external coloration (it's actually yellowish-green to gun-metal gray), but instead for its black colored mouth. The black mamba also holds the distinction of being the fastest snake in the world; moving 10-12mph (16-20 km/h).

black mamba head

Due to its blinding speed (which is used to escape predators usually, but has also been seen used for pursuit), highly venomous bite (there is a record of a black mamba taking down a full grown elephant), and aggressive nature (although they try to avoid confrontation through fleeing or scaring their “attacker”, black mambas will often strike with very little provocation and/or without any regard for an intruder's intent or actions), the black mamba has earned a reputation as one of the world's deadliest species of animal; some have even called it “death incarnate”.

black mamba tree

The black mamba can be found and therefore feared in the grasslands, savannas, rocky slopes, swamps, woodlands, and forests of The Democratic Republic of the Congo, Sudan, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Somalia, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Mozambique, Swaziland, Malawi, Zambia, Zimbabwe , Botswana, South Africa, Namibia, Angola, Lesotho, Rwanda, and Djibouti. An ambush predator that waits for its prey to stumble into it, the black mamba feeds on bush-babies, bats, small chickens, rodents, and other snakes. As a result of it's immense size and deadly bite, it has few natural predators, with only birds and humans being able to effectively take it down. However, largerspecimens have only humans to fear, as most birds of prey will be scared off by the size of the deadly reptile.
